A Splash Pad member review!
by Jani Stanley
The Phoenix Zoo’s new splash pad, Yakulla Caverns is the best hands down! This water play area opened in 2008, located across from the crossroads snack bar. My kids absolutely had a blast; with a giant realistic cavern that you can enter through a waterfall, tunnel or go up stone stairs to a slide, this play area promotes geological education, on top of being a whole lot of fun!
Once you’re in the cave it’s beautiful inside, water trickling down walls, Stalactites and Stalagmites cover the ceiling, and holes all around the cavern bring rays of sunlight beaming into it making the whole cave sparkle…just AWESOME!! I have younger children, which gave me an excuse (not that I needed one) to go in and explore, my kids played and played, and after about 2 ½ hours they still didn’t want to leave!
Another benefit to this cave is that your kids are outside playing, but they’re not in full sun the
whole time, very few, if any splash pads I’ve seen has anything like this, at best, one splash pad we
visited had a canopy over a few of their features. With so many fun things to do and see inside the cave
it helps minimize sun exposure and it helps them keep cool.
Another reason why this splash pad is the best, is they obviously had the parents in mind when they were building it because there is plenty of seating and shade. I’m not talking a couple of shady benches or picnic tables that you know you’ll have to fight for, this splash pad is lined with benches covered with canopies. What a huge difference this makes when you are in the summer heat having to sit for long periods of time. When we were there it was probably in the high 90’s and we were very comfortable.
I would recommend this splash to anyone who is looking for a fun, comfortable way of spending outdoor time with family in the Arizona summer heat!
